My Story

You only live once. But if you do it right, once is enough. —Chinese fortune cookie

I’m Melanie. I’m a passionate storyteller, traveler, and lifelong learner. My mission is simple: to learn as much as I can about the world I live in and to do something to make it more beautiful while I’m in it.

I started traveling in 2012. I spent six months in Be’er Sheva, Israel, where I met hiked ancient mountains and learned about intractable conflict. I fell in love with the Middle East, and I hope to go back. You can read more about that time here.

After college, I moved to Thailand to work as an English teacher outside of Bangkok and was able to explore some of mystical Southeast Asia. You can read more about that time here.

Currently, I’m on my biggest adventure yet: serving as an Education volunteer with the United States Peace Corps in Northern Madagascar. I live in a small village, teach English at the local middle school, and try and understand more every day.

Here I strive to give you stories that reflect the wonder of  Madagascar in all its rich tradition. I also write about my personal struggles and triumphs as an avid traveler and fighter of depression and other mental health issues along the journey. I welcome your comments, advice, suggestions and resources.

Over the next two years, the blog and I will change and adapt. I hope you’ll follow along. We’ve a long journey ahead, but there’s lots of time to explore our surroundings and get to know each other. So, pull up a chair, brew some tea, and let’s talk about the world.
